One of the most important questions I ask my patients is – how big do you want your family to be? How many children were you hoping for? 👫👫👫👫
Often we are focused on treating the immediate issue (having ONE child) – and we forget to ask about the big picture. But ultimately, we’d like to help patients achieve their ENTIRE family goal. 👨👨👦👩👩👦💫 When I’m determining what treatment option is best, an important question is whether the couple wants a big family. If so, I might be more apt to recommend IVF over IUI (intrauterine insemination). 🤔
Why? If someone were to get pregnant today – realistically, the next time they would try to get pregnant is two years from today. And as women – our fertility doesn’t increase over time – it decreases. ☔️ If it’s difficult to get pregnant now at (say 30 years old) – it won’t be any easier two years from today. And that’s if a family just wants two more children. IUI really just plans for the immediate future. And if the issue is not decreased number of eggs – this is a great place to start! It’s much less expensive and much less invasive. 😊
However, in some situations, it may be a better choice to start with IVF – especially when couples want a large family. When someone undergoes IVF, there is a chance embryos will be available to freeze and use for future family building. 🎁
If you were hoping for a big family (who doesn’t love big families?!) make sure we know this! That way we can tailor our plans to help meet your immediate AND future goals.
